WHAT IS THIS?

This weather radar is one of two weather radars which together form The Beamed Radar for Energy Assessment and Site Conditions (BEACon) project [the other unit was positioned off Rectory Lane at Tunstall].

The radar aims to gain detailed knowledge about the wind conditions around Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm. It will provide invaluable new data to help the development of even more efficient offshore wind farms.

WHY IS IT LOCATED HERE?

Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm was chosen as it is the most technologically advanced offshore wind farm in the world and the only commercial deployment of 6 MW Siemens turbines.

Outputs from the two radars (BEACon North and South) are combined to produce wind speed and direction measurements.

HOW LONG WILL IT BE HERE FOR?

The BEACon Weather Radar was commissioned in June 2016 and will remain in place for an 18 month monitoring period.

Upon completion of the monitoring the radar will be decommissioned and the area returned to its former condition.

WHO PUT IT UP?

The BEACon Weather Radars are part of DONG Energy Research and Development (R&D) project in collaboration with SmartWind Technologies.

DONG Energy own and operate the Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm.
